Feng Shui - the Chinese Art of Placement - is a multifaceted discipline that allows its practitioners to approach the task of harmonizing our personal environment from many perspectives. It utilizes an octagonal chart called the Ba Gua that enables us to determine the area in any house or building that pertains to one of the Eight Aspects of Life. These are: Career, Helpful People and Travel, Children and Creativity, Marriage and Relationship, Reputation, Wealth, Family and Health, and Knowledge and Self Cultivation.
Once these areas are located, the furnishings, art and colors that symbolize the qualities you wish to enhance are selected. Learning to consciously interact with your space further enhances desired changes. For example, when you water a plant in the wealth corner of a room, you are also nurturing the Aspect of Wealth.
Feng Shui is based on careful observation and heightened awareness of everything in the natural world. Cultivating this awareness can have very practical applications. This approach to interior design instills a respect for diversity and brings a sense of the sacred to everyday life. |
